Shaktikanta Das, former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), is now the Principal Secretary-2 to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved his appointment, announced on February 22, 2025. His tenure will coincide with the Prime Minister’s term or until further notice.
Das, an IAS officer from the 1980 Tamil Nadu cadre, served as RBI Governor from December 2018 to 2023. He guided India through significant financial challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war. Known for his crisis management and decisive policies, Das earned respect in both government and financial sectors.
As Principal Secretary-2, Das will advise the Prime Minister on economic matters, focusing on strengthening policies and governance. His appointment reflects the government’s commitment to strong economic management. This role will leverage Das’s extensive experience to improve the government’s decision-making framework.
