The tomato heist saga continues as another truckload of the precious commodity goes missing en route from Kolar to Jaipur. The incident, suspected to be linked to Karnataka, has raised concerns among traders as tomatoes maintain their high demand and value across the country. The missing consignment, valued at Rs 21 lakh and carrying 11 tonnes of tomatoes, has triggered a police investigation, while the local Agricultural Produce Market Committee estimates the price of tomatoes at Rs 160 per kg.
The Vanishing Truck: The truck, equipped with a GPS tracking system, departed from the Kolar Agricultural Produce Market Committee on July 27, aiming to reach its destination in Jaipur’s Mohana Sabji Mandi by Saturday night. However, when it failed to arrive, the trader, Vinay Reddy, who sent the tomato consignment, became concerned and attempted to contact the driver. Alas, the driver’s phone was switched off, leaving Reddy with no choice but to file a complaint at the Kolar police station, reporting the truck’s disappearance.
Preliminary Inquiry Reveals Ahmedabad Diversion: The police initiated a preliminary inquiry into the matter to ascertain the fate of the truck and its precious cargo. The inquiry revealed that the significant consignment of tomatoes, originally destined for Jaipur, ended up being delivered at a local vegetable market in Ahmedabad instead. Vinay Reddy suspects that the tomatoes were sold off by the driver, but so far, efforts to contact the driver have been in vain. Reddy also noted that the truck used for the diversion was not the same one used to transport the tomatoes from Kolar.
Multi-Party Loss: The consignment belonged to three different parties, adding to the complexity of the case. The affected parties are likely to reach Ahmedabad to file a complaint with the local police there as well. The incident adds to the growing list of tomato-related thefts and heists in the region. Just earlier this month, tomatoes worth Rs 2.5 lakh were stolen from a farm in Goni Somanahalli village in Belur taluk, and a couple from Tamil Nadu was arrested for hijacking a truck laden with 2.5 tonnes of tomatoes in Bengaluru.
Consequences of the Heist: The continuous theft of tomato consignments has raised concerns among traders and farmers in the region. The high demand and value of tomatoes have made them lucrative targets for thieves and criminals. Authorities are investigating the matter thoroughly to identify the culprits behind the heist and take appropriate actions to prevent such incidents in the future.
As the investigation unfolds, stakeholders in the agricultural and transport industries hope for swift action to recover the stolen tomatoes and bring the perpetrators to justice. In the meantime, traders and farmers remain vigilant, taking precautionary measures to safeguard their valuable produce as the tomato heist spree continues.
