GAIL India, a leading LNG buyer, anticipates that President Trump’s plan to boost LNG production will benefit India’s importers. Increased U.S. energy production is expected to make LNG imports more affordable for India, a price-sensitive market. High natural gas costs have been a barrier, but Trump’s policies may lower prices and increase global gas availability.
In 2020, Indian LNG imports peaked but struggled to rebound due to price surges following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. GAIL’s Chairman, Sandeep Kumar Gupta, believes that the new U.S. policies could help reduce the trade gap between the two countries while increasing India’s energy dependence.
GAIL plans to explore purchasing a stake in a U.S. LNG plant after the Trump administration lifted the ban on new export permits. The company recently closed a five-year LNG purchase agreement and intends to secure more long-term contracts based on domestic demand.
