Elon Musk’s Tesla is edging closer to hitting the Indian roads, with the government expediting the approval process, aiming for full clearance by January 2024, according to media reports. A meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office reviewed the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing phase in the country, including Tesla’s investment proposal. Discussions among Union Ministries, including Commerce and Industry, Heavy Industry, and Electronics and Information Technology, have revolved around Tesla’s plans since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with Musk in June.
In September, reports indicated Tesla’s intent to construct a battery storage factory in India, with a proposal submitted to the government. The automaker also offered to enhance the country’s battery storage capabilities through its ‘Powerwall’ product. Musk’s vision extends to creating a Tesla supply system within India.
Tesla aims to procure automobile components worth up to $1.9 billion from India this year, said Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, highlighting that the company already purchased $1 billion worth of components in the previous year, with a target of $1.7-$1.9 billion this year.”
